Morristown Celebrates as Washington Returns

MORRISTOWN – Gen. George Washington and his troops marched into Morristown on Sunday to commemorate the 225th anniversary of the arrival of the real man with real soldiers who fought in the American Revolution. They  set up camp here on January 6, 1777 following their highly successful campaigns at Trenton (Dec. 26, 1776) and Princeton (Jan. 3, 1777).

The reenactment was complete with a Gen. Washington look-alike (Bill Sommerfield), a contingent of mounted officers, armed foot soldiers, an artillery group with cannon and a fife

and drum corp complete with period uniforms.
A congratulatory ceremony was held in front of Arnold's

Tavern on North Park Place. The building at this site was draped with a painted façade replicating the appearance of the original tavern where Washington established his headquarters.
