YANKEES BEAT CARDINALS, 9-5


Sunday in NY-Penn League action at Skylands Park in Augusta, the Staten Island Yankees beat the New Jersey Cardinals, 9-5, in front of 3,134 fans. Staten Island captured the NY-Penn League championship in 2000. The loss drops New Jersey to 8-12 on the year.

Starting pitcher Richie

Burgess fell to 2-1 on the season, picking up his first loss at Skylands Park, and also allowing his first earned runs at home this season. Burgess fired 5.1 innings, allowing 10 hits in the loss with 1 strikeout.

John Nelson was the hit leader for the Cardinals, blasting his second home run in two days, for a team leading four home runs on the season. Nelson fueled the offense with a 2-5 day, including a two run home run in the fourth inning. Jesse Roman also kept a hot bat, rapping two hits for a 2-3 day, extending his season high hit streak to six games. John Santor and Chris Netwall also picked up two hits in the loss.

Yankee first round draft pick John-Ford Griffin was 4-5 with 2 RBI's. Teammate Shelley Duncan was 1-3 with 3 RBI's, including a 3 run home run in a five run sixth inning.

The New Jersey Cardinals will be back at Skylands Park on Wednesday, July 11 at 7:15 PM when they take on the Williamsport Crosscutters (Pittsburgh Pirates). The promotion for Wednesdays game will be NASCAR Night, featuring a Jeff Gordon simulator car on the concourse level. Other NASCAR items will be raffled off throughout the evening.
