Convent Station - A Brief History: The Academy of Saint Elizabeth, founded in Newark in 1859, was relocated to Convent Station in 1860 and was housed in a small building of the Seton Complex on Convent grounds in what previously had been used as a select French boarding school conducted by Madame Chegary, and more recently, as the home of Seton Hall College. Mother Mary Xavier Mehegan, foundress of the Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, appointed Sister Mary Agnes O'Neill as first Directress of the Academy in 1860.  In less than five years the school had achieved a reputation for scholarship, becoming an institution of culture and Catholic learning for young women. Finally in 1900, Xavier Hall was erected. This new Academy building contained classrooms, an auditorium, a library and laboratories. Xavier Hall is still in use today. No longer a boarding school, the Academy is situated on a 200-acre campus and remains a private Catholic secondary school for girls, which endeavors to develop well integrated students who will be eager and capable of taking their place in a democratic society.

Mission Statement: To Develop the full potential of each student in an atmosphere of educational excellence and moral responsibility that will foster leadership and commitment to the ideals of our Christian traditions and thus, prepare our young women to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century
