School is proud to announce that seniors Stephanie Tung and
have been honored with the National Council of Teachers of English's 2001 National Achievements in Writing Award. Tung is one of only a small number of students who earned the award in New Jersey. (Only 600 of the NCTE awards are granted nationally.) The award carries no cash prize as the NCTE is a not-for-profit organization. However, it does earn and Tung a NCTE Certificate of Commendation and a letter from the NCTE to the directors of admissions of over 3,000 colleges and universities informing them that the NCTE has recognized each of them as "one of the best student writers in the nation."
To earn this most-prestigious award, Tung : first had to be selected by the Morris Knolls High School
English Department as the school's nominee; then they each had to submit a sample of previously written work and an essay, written in a set time and under strict supervision, on a topic selected by the NCTE (The
2001 essay topic was on Teen Pressures/Stress.); and lastly they had to wait nervously from the April submission date until the announcement date in September to hear the results of their entries.
Of
Tung's earning the award, Teacher of Advanced Placement English Literature & Composition and English Department Consulting Teacher, Lorraine Hrobuchak, said: "Both Stephanie and possess a facility with language that is seen in few students their age; they are both most deserving of this award." Morris Knolls High School Principal, Kurt Weinheimer, added to Hrobuchak's statement by saying: "This is a credit to Stephanie's commitment to excellence in the field of writing and we are most proud of their accomplishments."
