You Know

By Miranda Tedholm

Regardez-vous the sitter, the waiter, the thumb-twiddler

Just a face in a crowd you'd soon ignore

The nobody, the somebody, the journey maker

Do you know but do you really

Know.

Them.

Who is the neighbor, the sister, the ice cream man

Inside-

A fire burns, ready to fly

A soul waiting to die.

But do you really, do you really know them

Twenty years later and it's all gone

Ashes of a world

Burned alive

The kid with dreams, the kid with problems,

The kid with the friendly smile-

Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, forget me, forgive me, but you must

Know this:

Cold wet ashes now but who were they?

The neighbor the sister the ice cream man.

Did you know?

Do you know?

Oh

Won't you ever know?

Morris Knolls High School is proud to announce that senior Miranda Tedholm will be honored at the 21st Annual Governor's Awards in Arts Education Ceremony. Tedholm is being recognized for her considerable achievements in the area of writing and creative writing. The ceremony will take place at the Trenton War Memorial in the states capital on Wednesday May 30, 2001. The Governors Awards in Arts Education Ceremony is the largest statewide arts recognition event, designed to promote awareness and appreciation of the arts by honoring the outstanding achievements of students and educators in New Jersey in creative writing, dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. The New Jersey State Department of Education and the New Jersey Alliance for Arts Education cosponsor the event. At the 2001 ceremony, over 100 students and educators will be honored for their achievements in arts education.

To receive a Governors Award in Arts Education, students must be selected by a national or statewide organization and must demonstrate excellence in an artistic discipline. Tedholm has done that many times. Earlier this school year she was honored with the National Council of Teachers of English's 2000 National Achievements in Writing Award. Tedholm was one of only a small number of students who earned the award in New Jersey. (only 600 of the NCTE awards are granted nationally.) Besides her NCTE award, Tedholm is also a published writer of fiction and poetry, too. She has seen her work published in the online literary magazine Between the Lines and The Live Poetry's Society Magazine, and is a regular in Morris Knolls' creative arts magazine, Spectrum. She has also made her words leave the page by in the last two years participating in many local and regional spoken word competitions.

Of Tedholm's earning the award, Teacher of Advanced Placement English Literature & Composition and English Department Consulting Teacher, Lorraine Hrobuchak, said: "Miranda's facility with language is seen in few students her age; she is most deserving of this award. Morris Knolls High School Principal, Kurt Weinheimer, added to Hrobuchak's statement by saying: "This is a credit to Miranda's commitment to excellence in the field of writing and we are most proud of her accomplishment."
