New Brunswick -
On March 16, 2001 a special brand of March Madness returned to the College Avenue Gymnasium at Rutgers University as 34 teams of high school students pit their technical skills and strategic savvy against each other in robot battles. FIRST ( For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology) is a national competition that partners high school students with professional engineers to design and build radio-controlled robots. The teams have only six weeks to complete their robots using a standard kit of parts. They compete in two-minute elimination matches. FIRST delivers a powerful message that engineering can be fun, creative and rewarding. The competition makes heroes out of students who work smart and are good at science and technology. The FIRST Mid-Atlantic Robotics Competition is sponsored by Johnson & Johnson with additional support from KeySpan Corporation and hosted by Rutgers University.
