June 26 at Skylands Park in Augusta, NJ the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox) defeated the New Jersey
Cardinals in their home opener by a score of 4-1.
Three Lowell pitchers combined for a one-hitter. Starter Felix Villegas and relievers Brian Bentley and
Dan Giese silenced the Cardinals bats.
Villegas hurled the first six innings, yielding the lone safety to New Jersey third baseman Landon Brandes in the second inning. The starter also tallied four strikeouts.
The Cardinals scored their only run in the first inning after leadoff hitter, Chris Morris led off with a
walk. He stole second, advanced to third on a fielder's choice and then scored on a sacrifice fly by left fielder Dee Haynes.
Nathaniel Meza took the loss for New Jersey in his second start of the season. He gave up two earned
runs on four hits, while striking out one. Relievers Bienvenido Polo, Chris Fiora and Santo Samora each pitched a scoreless inning.
Lowell's leadoff hitter, third baseman Greg Filson paced the Spinners attack, collecting three hits, including
a double, and three runs batted in on the evening. Shortstop Raul Nieves tacked on two base hits from the two-hole. Four other Spinners tallied singles as the club scored a pair of runs in
the third and seventh innings.
