CARDINALS DEFEAT PITTSFIELD
The New Jersey Cardinals, the Class A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, defeated the Pittsfield Mets (New York Mets) by a score of 4-3 in 10 innings in the series finale at Skylands Park
in front of 4,045 fans.
The Cardinals scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning. Geraldo Vasquez led off with a single, advanced to third on an error on the third baseman Don Lichay. After an intentional walk to pinch hitter Jaime Pogue, he scored the winning run on a fielder's choice off the bat of Covelli Crisp.
Reliever Mike Meyer got the victory after he pitched a scoreless 10th inning. Chad Elliott took the loss after giving up 2 earned runs in 5.2 innings of work..
New Jersey jumped
out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning. Covelli Crisp walked and scored on a triple by Dee Haynes, who later scored on a sacrifice fly by John Gall. The Cards scored another run in the 5th when Gustavo Escobar singled and scored when Chris Morris grounded into a fielder's choice.
Starter Shaun Stokes hurled 5 scoreless innings, yielding only 5 hits and collected 7 strikeouts but got a no decision on the afternoon.
The Mets got back in the ball game as they tacked on a run in the 6th off reliever Jim Journell. They came back to tie it in the 8th as they reached Santo Samora and Mike Grippo for 1 run each.
The New Jersey Cardinals will enjoy and off day tomorrow and will then head out for a four game road trip with two games at both Oneonta and Auburn. The club will return home to play host to the
Jamestown Jammers on July 15th at 5 p.m. and July 16th at 1 p.m.
